The late Art Professor John Gutmann founded the creative photography program at SF State as the first curriculum in the U.S. to teach photography as fine art, in 1946 — the same year Ansel Adams and Minor White established one of the nation's first fine art photography departments, at the San Francisco Art Institute.

SF State Art Department Faculty Exhibition

Come join us at the opening reception of the SF State Faculty Exhibition, September 23rd from 4-6 in the Fine Arts Gallery, room 238 in the Fine Arts building. View a collective of premier Bay Area and internationally recognized artists — better known as the faculty of SF State’s Art Department — present an inspiring exhibit of their work. Ceramics, photography, printmaking, painting, drawing, textiles, sculpture, video and multimedia installation by 19 faculty members.

The art department offers a tour of its facilities on the last Thursday of every month from 1-2pm, beginning Thursday, September 25th. Bren Ahearn, a current M.F.A. student in Textiles and the art department graduate secretary, will give a tour of our facilities as well as provide information about our undergraduate and graduate programs. The last tour of the Fall 2008 semester will be given on Friday, December 19th at 1:00 p.m.

Alum displays '(un)wearable' art

Alumna Dawn-Marie Forsyth is one of three artists whose work is on display in "(un)wearable," an exhibition opening Sept. 2 as part of Santa Cruz Fashion WeekTackling the struggle and triumph of the feminine spirit, Forsyth's work with textiles is both aesthetically calming and evocative. The installation of fine fabrics and aluminum takes the form of whimsical straight jackets, creating an emotional and logical impact on the viewer.
