Art Education

Art majors with an emphasis in art education take a broad, diversified program that includes in-depth study in one studio area as well as many courses outside that area, including two art education courses. The art education major prepares students for the Single Subject Credential in Art. Art majors with an emphasis in art education automatically complete the requirements for Subject Matter Competency for the Credential Program in fulfilling the requirements for the major. The Art Education area is housed in a classroom similar to public school art classrooms. The Art Education Area offers two courses in theory and practice in contemporary art education. Both courses are studio courses that cover art materials and techniques as well as teaching objectives and strategies in light of the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework and Standards. The art education area also offers two service-learning courses in art education that gives students hands-on teaching experience in local and international venues.
