Ceramics

The Ceramics Area provides a thorough foundation in ceramics information and technique. Studio courses ranging from exploration to advanced are supported by excellent facilities and opportunities for participation in professional and community-based events and exhibitions. A vibrant contributor to the Bay Area¹s long and vital ceramics tradition, the Ceramics Area¹s faculty includes professors Jeff Downing, an active participant in the “next generation” of contemporary figurative ceramics, and David Kuraoka, a major influence in raku and pit firing. Students are encouraged to develop their visual perception and to understand clay as a three-dimensional medium. Studio classes teach an understanding of materials and processes to prepare students to build professional futures in ceramics. Well-equipped studios include gas, electric, and Raku at the San Francisco campus and soda and pit fire kilns at the Ceramic area¹s large off-campus facility at San Francisco State University's Romberg Tiburon Center for the Environmental Studies.
