The Painting Area provides a program of studio courses emphasizing visual awareness. Coursework is directed at understanding basic technical skills and processes in the beginning level classes. Work in intermediate and advanced classes gradually builds toward developing ideas and helping students identify their own interests in the medium. While painting and drawing are productive endeavors in themselves, courses are also directed toward acquiring basic and advanced visual language skills that might be applied to other disciplines. Attention is given to diverse histories and traditions in addition to the long history of painting and drawing in the western tradition. Of particular interest in the Painting Area’s class offerings is an emphasis on contemporary studio practice and discourse.
