Johnson2Mark Dean Johnson is currently professor of art and gallery director at San Francisco State University. His curatorial work includes a focus on California contemporary and historical art, and several of his projects have explored under represented contributions to regional art history. He is the Principal Editor of 'Asian American Art: A History, 1850-1970' (2008, Stanford University Press), and served as principal guest curator of a related exhibition at the de Young Museum ('Asian/American/Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900-1970'; 2008, catalog available through the University of California Press). He also co-curated an exhibition and co-edited the book 'Pacific Light: A Survey of California Watercolor, 1908-2008 in association with the Nordiska Akvarellmuseet in Sweden in 2008; and 'AT WORK: The Art of California Labor' in association with the California Historical Society in 2003. He has also organized solo exhibitions of artists including Chang Dai-chien, Martin Wong, Dong Kingman, and others and many thematic group exhibitions exploring art and society.

Before coming to SFSU in 1994, he was a Professor of Art at Humboldt State University (1984-1989) and the San Francisco Art Institute (1989-2004). He was also a fellow at the Stanford University Research Institute for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity (2003-2008).
