HunterPusan2smLeonard attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Architecture and the University of California Department of Art where he received his M.F.A. degree. He has had an active professional life including large public commissions as well as long term involvement with many arts organizations including the NEA (where he was acting and Assistant Director of the Visual Arts Program for 3 years) and the Headlands Center for the Arts (where he was a member for six years of the founding board).

In addition, Leonard has served on hundreds of juries all around the country for various state, city and private agencies commissioning public art. Leonard's work is primarily architectural in scale and involves a wide range of construction and sculptural materials and techniques.

He is particularly versed in metals fabrication, but is primarily interested in finding and using the right materials (whatever they may be) to best reflect a specific concept, location, function and intended audience for his art works. As a teacher, Leonard instructs all levels of classes (beginning through graduate) and teaches about how to use a multitude of materials, techniques and conceptual strategies in art-making.
