Studio MFA Program: TOEFL if the applicant is a non-native speaker who hasn't received a bachelor's degree in the US. (No GRE for MFA applicants.)

Art History MA Program: GRE + TOEFL-if the applicant is a non-native speaker who hasn't received a bachelor's degree in the US.

Art Department Office Closed Week of 11/23

The art department office, as well as the fine arts building, will be closed November 23rd through November 27 for state mandated furloughs and the thanksgiving holiday. The office will reopen on Monday, November 30th.

Saturday Open Studios for the Fall 2009 Semester

The following are the remaining Saturday Open Studio dates for the fall 2009 semester:

December 5
December 12

Note: Studios will not be open November 21st and 28th because of the fall recess. Studios will not be open on Saturday after December 12th.

Saturday Open Studio gives enrolled art students a chance to work in the studio on specific Saturdays during the fall and spring semester. Most art studios are open from 9-4. Students must sign up in the art office beginning at 9:00 am on Wednesday through Friday by 12:00 pm, before the Saturday they would like to use the studio. Telephone calls and emails are excepted so long as a name and room number is provided. Not all studios are available on Saturdays, please check with your instructor to see if the studio is allowed to be used during Saturday open studio. Students that use the studio on Saturday but failed to sign up may be asked to leave.

All students must be out of the studio by 4:00pm. The studio spaces should be respected and students are expected to clean up after themselves and turn off all equipment after use. Students who fail to follow Saturday studio procedures may loose studio privileges.

How do I file for a withdrawal from a course?

Withdrawals are accepted after the drop deadline, through week 12,for the following serious and compelling reasons with noted required documentation, per the College of Creative Arts withdrawal policy:

Illness- documentation from medical authority required
Disability-related- documentation from DPRC required
Emotional problem- documentation from therapist required
Family emergencies such as illness and death- supporting documentation required as appropriate with reason
Change in childcare- supporting documentation required as appropriate with reason
Change in work hours-documentation from employer, stating that student is required to change schedules or add hours required
Financial problems- proof that financial problems impact the class in question differentially from other classes required
Other calamitous reasons, i.e. sudden homelessness- documentation as appropriate required

The following reasons are not considered compelling and may not be approved:

Changing major
Poor performance
Need more time to study for other classes
Missed too many classes for undocumented reasons
Only registered to have more units for financial aid

Withdrawals weeks 13-15 (standard university policy) are permitted only in cases of verified accident or documented serious illness or when an incomplete is not practical.

If your reasoning falls within the approved guidelines than complete the Withdrawal Form , attach a copy of your unofficial transcript and required supporting documentation noted above and see the instructor of the course you would like to withdraw from. Once you have the instructor's signature take your form to the art office, FA 265, for the chairs signature. When the chair has signed the form the art office will submit the form to the college of creative arts for the dean's signature. If the withdrawal is approved by the dean the form will then go to the registrar who will then complete the withdrawal process. If the withdrawal is not approved the student will be contacted by the art office upon the return of the denied withdrawal form.

How do I pay my lab fees?

The art department has a new system for collecting lab fees. In an effort to save paper, money and time, students will now be charged lab fees to their university financial account after the add deadline. Lab fee payments will not be accepted by the bursars office until after the add deadline.

There are no slips to give to the bursars office. Simply go to the bursars office in the student services building at one stop or the bursars office on the first floor of the administration building, present your student ID and any lab fees you owe will show up in the system.

Please note that unpaid balances a students university account can affect registration, graduation or other campus services.

An art department graduate assistant conducts tours once a month, generally on the last Thursday of every month. Please email artgrad@sfsu.edu to find out about the next art department tour. You must RSVP to attend a tour.

MA and MFA Program Application Period

The art department will begin accepting applications for the MA and MFA program for the Fall 2010 semester on November 1st. The application period closes on January 15th. Please visit the MA and MFA program pages for information on the programs and how to apply.

How do I apply for graduation in the art department?

Application Deadlines:

If you plan to graduate at the end of the Summer applications are due the second Wednesday in July.
If you plan to graduate at the end of the Fall semester applications are due the last Wednesday in September.
If you plan to graduate at the end of the Spring semester applications are due the third Wednesday in February.

Please follow these steps to complete your graduation application and senior project before submitting it to the art office:

See your faculty adviser with a preliminary copy of your graduation application available online http://www.sfsu.edu/~admisrec/reg/formstoc.html
Finalize your grad app and your senior project* with your adviser
Turn in grad app with adviser signature to the art office, FA 265.
Complete the Art Department Senior Exit Survey online. The web link will be emailed to you when you turn in your application for the chair's signature. The senior exit survey is required and must be completed before a graduation application can be picked up.
Go to Art department office, FA 265, to pick up grad app.
Pay graduation application fee at the bursar's.
Turn in completed graduation application to the registrar.

*Undergraduate students are required to complete a senior project during their final year in the art department, with faculty advisement. Please review the senior project form for your concentration, below, for instructions.

How do I declare a Minor in Art?

Students wishing to declare a Minor in Art must see a faculty adviser in the area of emphasis they are most interested in (Photography, Painting, Art History, etc.) with a copy of the university change/add minor form and a Art Minor advising form . Faculty Advising office hours are available in the Faculty and Staff section of the art website. The faculty adviser must initial the change/add minor form. Bring the initialed change/add minor form to the art office, FA 265, to receive the chair's signature. The student will be told when they can pick the form back up. The completed form must be delivered, by the student, the the registrar's window at One Stop in the student Service building.

How do I change/add art as my major?

An additional form is required to change/add art as your major and is available for download below or for pick up in the art office, FA 265. See an adviser in the area of emphasis you are interested in concentrating in, with a copy of your DARS report and unofficial transcript (available on your MySFSU page). Click here for a list of faculty advisers contact information, office hours and areas of emphasis. The faculty adviser will sign your art department change/add major form. Bring the art department form and University change/add major form to the art office, FA 265, for the department chair signature. It is the student's responsibility to pick the form up after the chair has signed it and drop it off to the Registrar in the student services building.

UPDATE: We have changed the policy for changing or adding art as your major beginning June 1, 2009.

Students must have successfully completed:

12 units of 200 level prerequisite core courses at SFSU or the equivalent at another institution(6 units of 200 level studio courses: ART 222, 231, 240,245 or 260 and 6 units of 200 level art history courses: ART 201, 202, 204 or 205) with a grade of C better.
lower division requirements (including segment II) of general education requirements at SFSU or the equivalent at another institution

Note that not all required classes are available every semester. Students can fulfill lower division requirements at a local community college. Please visit the assist website to find out what courses from community colleges are equivalent to lower division art courses at SF State. It is the students responsibility to transfer transcripts from other colleges and universities to SF State in order to receive credit for courses at the time of application for graduation.

Change/Add Major New Policy Beginning June 1, 2009

We have changed the policy for changing or adding art as your major.

Students must have successfully completed:

12 units of 200 level prerequisite core courses at SFSU or the equivalent at another institution(6 units of 200 level studio courses: ART 222, 231, 240,245 or 260 and 6 units of 200 level art history courses: ART 201, 202, 204 or 205 with a grade of C better.

The form below needs to be filled out with an adviser once requirements have been completed. This form should be attached to a filled out SFSU change/add minor form, which can be found online http://www.sfsu.edu/~admisrec/reg/changemajor.html before submitting to the art department office.

How do I get a locker?

Any lockers that are not in a studio space can be rented for a small fee at the box office in the creative arts building. These lockers include the lockers by the back of the sculpture studio, the lockers between Art Ed and Painting and most lockers in the creative arts building. The box office hours during the fall and spring semesters are 12-4 Monday through Friday. Extended hours are held during the first week of the fall and spring semesters.

How do I drop a course?

Students can drop a course through their MySFSU page. Please check the drop deadline on the university calendar, http://oi.sfsu.edu/cgi-bin/student/webcalendar.htm. After the drop deadline the student must speak with the instructor about withdrawing from a course, following the withdrawal guidelines.

How do I petition for a change of grade?

See the instructor of the course you would like to petition a grade change for to discuss this option. Grade Changes have to be submitted by instructors. Students cannot submit grade changes.

Headlands MFA Studio Award

Deadline to be announced - Headlands Center for the Arts MFA Studio Awards Program provides a free studio for one year to an outstanding graduate from six sponsoring Bay Area MFA programs, allowing young artists to immerse themselves in the HCA’s dynamic community of artists at all stages of creative development. Studio occupancy at the Headlands for 2009-2010 program is schedule to begin June 1, 2010. Each recipient has the opportunity to work in an 1800 square foot Project Space and live at the Headlands for one week at the conclusion of the award period. We will begin accepting applications in the spring 2010 semester.

Award:

Studio occupancy at the Headlands Center for the Arts for 2009-2010 program year.

SFSU Full-time Classified Graduate
MFA candidate graduating Spring 2009
In good academic standing

Application Submission Materials:
