Abildgaard first took an interest in ceramics while attending Davis Senior High School. He went on to study the medium at San Francisco State University, and eventually received a master's degree in fine arts from the University of Hawaii. It was living in the Pacific Islands where he gained inspiration for his masks, totem pool and boat-shaped pieces.
